EU and International Batteries Legislation

To ensure the transition towards a resource and energy efficient society and to facilitate the generation of a green and circular economy while promoting technological advancements, RECHARGE and its members actively contribute to the legislative and industrial developments in the rechargeable battery sector.

Given their versatile use, rechargeable batteries are subject to a series of different legal frameworks, reaching from (raw) materials handling, manufacturing and design, to transport, use and end-of-life management. On December 10, the European Commission published its legislative proposal for a revised batteries legislation.

A major novelty is the shift from Directive to Regulation. Also new are additional requirements for social responsibility and sustainability. 

A supporter of the European sustainability agenda, RECHARGE participated with strong evidence and industry knowledge in the respective institutional work programs to help establish an adequate regulatory framework, enabling European actors to execute on the technological, environmental and social leadership ambitions of the Strategic Action Plan on Batteries.
