Research & Innovation for Sustainable Battery Power

The Commission’s Strategic Action Plan for Batteries foresees an increase in EU research and innovation support along the value chain to strengthen the industrial leadership potential of the European battery industry.

Battery Research, Innovation and Development in Europe

The European Union has made batteries a strategic imperative for its new industrial policy goal to make the EU the world leader in innovation, digitization and decarbonization. By mid-2019, the European Union has granted battery research and innovation projects worth €430 million, with more funding to come in 2020 and beyond.

To boost the creation of a sustainable, competitive battery value chain in Europe and to prepare for the industrialization of next generation rechargeable batteries, RECHARGE actively contributes to this development by identifying, promoting and driving relevant projects.

Our R&I activities include:

  • Guidance on funding opportunities for RECHARGE members
  • Knowledge and data sharing
  • Project advisory and monitoring
  • Participation in steering committees

Discover some of our R&I activities here:

ETIP Batteries

RECHARGE is represented in the European Technology and Innovation Platform (ETIP) on Batteries (also BatteRIes Europe), which was launched under the scope of the European Battery Alliance to organize all research activities for energy storage under one roof. ETIP Batteries also includes former SET projects.

FET Flagship Battery 2030+

RECHARGE is at the core of the Battery 2030+ Future Emerging Technologies (FET) Flagship group, created to support long-term research in ultra-high performance, smart and sustainable batteries.

EIP on Raw Materials

Within the scope of Horizon 2020, RECHARGE is part of the European Initiative Partnership (EIP) on Raw Materials. The dedicated EIP looks into the challenges related to raw materials and raw materials sourcing. As part of our contributions to sustainable raw material sourcing, RECHARGE also provides important data to the European Commission’s Raw Materials Information System.

ProSum

RECHARGE was funded by the EU Commission in the ProSUM project in order to contribute to the ‘Urban mine’ mapping, identifying critical raw materials in batteries. The ProSUM project provides important data to the EU’s Raw Materials Information System.

Research, innovation and development for batteries in Europe is covered by different bodies in the European Union. DG RTD, DG MOVE, DG ENER, DG CNECT as well as DG CLIMA are actively involved in setting the strategic direction for RD&I in the battery value chain and providing funding and other services.

With the aim of streamlining – and boosting – research, development and innovation activities for batteries in stationary applications and e-mobility in Europe, the European battery value chain entered in 2020 a dedicated RD&I partnership (Batteries European Partnership) with the European Union.

RECHARGE has actively contributed to its creation since the very beginning and today serves as Observer Association in the Batteries European Partnership Association (BEPA). The BEPA is the private-side delegation to the Partnership and has as objective to set, manage and drive the innovation agenda in Europe.
